Rural Businesses in Need of Reliable Internet to Succeed

A recent study by the British Chambers of Commerce identified the need to bring a reliable internet connection to those in rural areas, especially for smaller businesses. These companies are aware of the importance of having access to the internet to run a successful business, with 82% identifying it as extremely important.

Yet almost one in five (18%) of companies asked on the survey revealed that their current broadband connection was unreliable, of which 30% came from rural areas.

Having access to fast broadband internet would help businesses grow by allowing them to use more apps specialised on improving productivity, security and general management of staff and admin, as well as the opportunity to market their business digitally in line with current trends.

Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, Dr Adam Marshall, said:

“Business communities across the UK still report that our digital infrastructure is not fit for purpose. Throughout the country, significant numbers of companies of every size and sector lack reliable internet connectivity – a basic requirement for businesses to operate efficiently in today’s world.”

“Unreliable connections stunt productivity, causing needless delays, costs and frustration. While businesses in every corner of the UK are affected, our research shows that it’s rural areas and small businesses that are most likely to suffer. An unreliable connection acts as an obstacle to growth, and puts those firms most in need of support at a competitive disadvantage.”

“We’ve been calling on both providers and on government for years to fund the necessary upgrades required to deliver superfast broadband to business communities [...] The immediate focus must be on providing all companies with connections that are reliable and of sufficient speed, which would boost business confidence and encourage firms to maximise opportunities for growth, trade and investment.”

Global Teleports and Bentley Walker are two companies who have both identified the potential of this market and have consequently set up successful businesses centred around bringing satellite broadband to those places in the world where traditional network providers don’t reach effectively.
