EUROPE’S LONGEST INDOOR SKI SLOPE COULD BE COMING TO WALES

One of the world’s longest indoor ski slopes could be coming to Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales. At 500m long, the slope would become the longest indoor ski slope in Europe, and would be amongst the top five longest in the world.

Plans for the ambitious £450 million extreme sports leisure complex also include a variety of other action sports attractions such as an indoor bike and skate park, an equestrian centre and what would become the UK’s largest indoor waterpark.

Marvel Limited acquired the 575 acre site back in 2013, and along with Snowsport Cymru Wales they hope to be able to make this project a reality.

Leigh Large, of Marvel Limited, said: "We believe our scheme's exciting sport and adventure facilities will attract more visitors to Merthyr."

If the project comes to fruition, the snowsports facility could become the official training base for Team GB’s ski and snowboard team.

"I am very excited by the prospect of having a national training centre of excellence for snowsports in Wales," said performance director of British Ski and Snowboard Dan Hunt.

The local community surrounding Rhydycar West will be able to submit their thoughts about this development this autumn once the official consultation period opens.
